A good watch is built to last decades — often longer than the man who first wound it. A little care keeps it running beautifully, and keeps it worth passing on.
Everyday care
- Wipe the case and bracelet with a soft, dry cloth to lift skin oils and dust.
- Avoid knocks and sudden temperature changes.
- Keep the watch away from strong magnets — speakers, tablet covers, laptop closures.
Water resistance
Water resistance ratings assume a properly sealed crown. Always screw down or push in the crown fully before any contact with water, and rinse with fresh water after swimming in the sea. Never operate the crown underwater. If you dive regularly, have the gaskets checked periodically — more on that in our dive watch guide.
Winding & setting
Automatic
Winds through wrist motion. Unworn a day or two, it may stop — simply wind and reset the time.
Quartz
Runs on a battery, typically replaced every two to three years by a watchmaker.
Servicing intervals
A mechanical movement benefits from a full service roughly every four to six years, to re-lubricate and reseal. Quartz watches need little beyond battery and gasket changes. Unsure which movement you own? It is listed on every product page, and explained in Automatic vs Quartz.
Storage
- Keep the watch in its box, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
- A watch box or roll protects the crystal and bracelet between wears.
- For automatics worn in rotation, a winder is a pleasure but never a necessity.
