It uses a mecaquartz chronograph, the Seiko VK64, a hybrid that combines quartz accuracy with a mechanical chronograph module for a crisp, snappy chronograph action.
With 100m of water resistance it handles rain, hand-washing and swimming comfortably. We suggest avoiding hot showers, saunas and diving.

Been wearing the Aim High model to work and out on weekends. The matte black dial with the Air Force emblem looks awesome in person. Only minor gripe is the small sub-dial numerals take a second to read without my reading glasses.
As a military aviation buff, I love how Hemel integrated the USAF insignia and cockpit-style sub-registers on the Mission Objectives dial. The VK64 pushers have a firm mechanical click, the 24-hour sub-dial is handy, and the 12-hour bezel tracks Zulu time easily.
Bought the Mach Speed edition for my dad's 70th birthday since he served four years as an Air Force crew chief in his youth. He was thrilled with the dial graphics and the solid feel of the 42mm steel case, and he wears it everywhere now.
The 20mm lug width on this 42mm Specialist model makes strap changes a breeze. I have rotated it between the factory black leather, a gray NATO, and a tropic rubber strap, and the matte black dial works with all three.

Wore the Aim High edition out camping and kayaking along the American River last weekend. The 100m water resistance and bright lume make it a great outdoor piece. The outer presentation box was fairly basic, though the watch itself is clearly where the money went.
Picked up the Mission Objectives variant. The 42mm case tolerances are tight, the bezel clicks cleanly with zero slop, and the Seiko VK64 chronograph hand resets dead on the 12 o'clock marker. High legibility and 100m water resistance make it a solid tool watch.
The Mach Speed variant looks great on the stock riveted leather strap, but swapping it onto a 20mm olive drab canvas strap made the USAF roundel and red accents pop even more. Wears very comfortably on my wrist.
I was a little hesitant ordering a microbrand watch online without handling it first, but the Specialist edition of the HFT20 USAF won me over immediately. The case brushing is crisp, the flat AR sapphire is crystal clear, and the USAF dial detailing is sharp without looking tacky.
